A specialty of The Print Research
Foundation is its collection of prints made by artists employed by the
Works Progress Administration (WPA) and other Federal Government relief
programs of the 1930s-early 1940s. The Foundation has extensive files and
reference materials on WPA artists, their work, and the WPA printmaking
activities.
An excellent
compilation of WPA artists is the Biographical Index of WPA Printmakers,
by Anthony White. The Index is available in hard copy and on-line
at the Print Research Foundation. Anthony White is a researcher of 20th
century American printmakers, a former dealer in the prints of Roi
Partridge and other California printmakers, and an author, whose writings
include a catalogue rasionné of the art of Jeannette Mayfield Lewis.
Other of White’s compilations of American printmakers are also available
at the Foundation.
The
Foundation provided grants to The Newark Museum of Art (www.newarkmuseum.org),
The Gibbes Museum of Art (Charleston, SC) (www.gibbesmuseum.org)
and the Baltimore Museum of Art (www.artbma.org)
for the cataloguing of the WPA prints in the collection of those museums.
Copies of these catalogues are available for study at the Foundation and
at each of the museums.
